Game: Godhand Reviewed by: Evo Gamer
Game type: Action

Creators: Clover Studios
Console: Playstation 2
Console ports: none
Year: 2006 Version: JAP
Specials:
Godhand, the game is about a guy (with no name mentioned) who's arm got cut off by demons. He then gets helped out by Alivia in which she gives him a Godhand arm. The Godhand is an arm that gives supernatural energy. Along with the Godhand, their is Devilhand
Clover Studios has an excellent streak for making video games with a unique style. Past experience of games made by them would be the excellently animated Okami and unique comic stripped style scrolling beat-em-up Viewitful Joe1/2. Now, adding along to Clover Studios games is a game that is very odd to say the least.
My first impressions of Godhand was that the gameplay seemed alot like a 3D scrolling beat em up because of the way it was structured. Godhand wasnt presented very well when it came to having a intro. The game starts by having a main menu (bizzare, i thought most games would have a nice little intro). You start off with a blonde, jelled up hair guy who has to protect a sweet but devious girl named Alivia in the early stages of the game from a pack of half human/half demon species.
The gameplay can be refered to a game like Final Fight: Streetwise or The Bouncer because all you do is go around beating people up, buy power ups/new techniques/moves, advance to next level and so fourth. So I bet your wondering now is this game repetitive? Maybe. But the humour alone in this game is funny because it's so ridculous. For example: The first boss are two game guys who support a thong with gay feather wings and talk in a queer manor. You have 5 midgets dressed in a classic power rangers fashion.
A major flaw in the game is a no block button. Right analog stick is used to dodge attacks or do backflips. Another major flaw is the no camera control. The in-game camera is fixed only behind the camera and there is no solution to allowing you to manoveur the camera freely.
Plus factor to this game is the way they have set out the moves. Godhand gives you the oppotunity to create your own combo string aswell as buy moves from the moves shop. As the game progresses, you will unlock new moves the more you complete stages. This means you will constantly be changing up the moves you give to your character, and not be using the same moves over and over until you complete the game.
There's times in the game where your opponent might get dizzy. When this happens, the game will prompt you to press 'o'. This will go into a button bashing mode where you have to press any button as much as possible to deliever fast hits to your opponent. Moves that will be activated in this mode consist of:
- Slapping female opponents behinds
- Agressively punching stomach area
- multiply kicking opponent without making the kicking leg touch the ground
- Stamping on a ground opponent
- Kneeing an opponent then DDT them
Godhand is this somewhat a powerup that allows you to beat up everyone without getting hurt or without an enemy reversing your attacks. It's only useful for a short ammount of time though.
Activating God Reel requires you to get a God Reel card so you access it. God Reel performs a matrix style time freeze while you choose a stylish move to use on your opponent(s), bare in mind that you have a time limit to choose a move. Each move effective or looks stylish in someway. Examples of God Reel attacks would be:
- A Flying sink that drops on the main characters head (Does damage to you and not opponent)
- A massive axe kick with two extra stamps included
- A backhand projectile
- One inch punch
Gameplay in general does have its tactical points. For example, if your opponent is blocking, you cant use regular attacks because your opponent will break your attack string and attack you. There are moves that break guarding opponents which opens them up to follow up attacks. Other than that, the game isnt really saying much and it's not really insiprational to completing the actual game. Only reason I wanted to complete it was because of the humourous cut scenes (even that may not make alot of people laugh) and the funny spinoff characters of real life series (Power Rangers).
Audio isnt really inspirational at all as you will mostly forget 3/4 of the tracks in the game once you have completed the game. The main character has alot of cheeky lines he says in the game that may of saved the game from being a pile of dog meat. Some of the music I actually digged alot but then some of it wasnt what I wanted to listen to.
